South Jerrabomberra will soon be home to a new commercial neighbourhood centre, with early works now commenced on ‘Marketplace at Botanical’ Stage 1 by developer, Poplars Developments Pty Ltd.

In 2013, the ‘Poplars – Local Environmental Plan’ re-zoned land bordering Tompsitt Drive on the approach to Jerrabomberra. In addition to the 7.6 Ha neighbourhood centre at North Poplars, a 32.0 Ha business park has been zoned at South Poplars.

Stage 1 of the ‘Marketplace at Botanical’ development will include a service station, restaurant / fast food outlets and retail/service space. The development commenced with the demolition of the derelict farmhouse and shearing sheds that had fallen in to disrepair after rural activities were no longer viable on the site. Civil works, including the construction of a new signalised intersection on Tompsitt Drive are due to commence in August, with construction completion of subdivision works expected in the first quarter of 2019. The new intersection will ultimately also provide access to the Botanical Business Park and South Jerrabomberra residential areas.

“The development has been many, many years in the making and has required extensive liaison with the Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council. We hope this first phase of development triggers a renewed focus on the Jerrabomberra area and delivers a broad range of facilities for the community. The Botanical development will be the new gateway between Canberra and Jerrabomberra, so we see great opportunities to bring business investment to the area,” said Chris Daly from BMCA, the project managers of the development.

Poplars Developments brings together land owners David and James Larcombe, Goodwin & Kenyon Pty Ltd and the Riverview Group.

“My family has owned the land for more than 30 years, Jerrabomberra is our home. That’s why we are so excited to bring additional business investment to the region and to support the development of our community,” said David Larcombe.

In addition to the neighbourhood centre, the planning for the broader South Jerrabomberra area continues to evolve.

“This is a very exciting development for the Queanbeyan area and provides some much needed retail and employment land for development. The South Jerrabomberra area will see some significant progress over the coming years, with the establishment of the proposed South Tralee residential area and early planning underway for the development of a Regional Sports Precinct, educational facility and an innovation hub at the business park,” Queanbeyan-Palerang Mayor, Cr Tim Overall said.
