Media Release – Wednesday 22 April 2015

Canberra’s favourite Sunday markets and award winning tourist attraction, the Old Bus Depot Markets, has just signed its first ever long term lease.

The occasion was marked today with the signing of a ceremonial certificate by ACT Chief Minister and Minister for Tourism, Andrew Barr MLA, together with the Old Bus Depot Markets Directors, Diane Hinds and Morna Whiting.

“We are thrilled to have secured this long term lease for the Old Bus Depot Markets to continue operating within our gorgeous heritage listed old bus depot,” said the Old Bus Depot Markets Director, Diane Hinds.

“Over the last 20 years the markets have played a major role in Canberra’s tourism and heritage landscape. We are very grateful that with the ACT Government’s continued support and assistance to sign our first long term lease, that  we can also continue our role as a genuine business incubator in Canberra.

“Having operated our markets successfully in the Old Bus Depot in Kingston since 1998, Canberrans and visitors to the ACT know where our home is. Signing the long term lease means we have security as a major part of the Kingston Foreshore arts and culture precinct going forward,” Ms Hinds continued.

Ms Hinds said the move would also build the markets’ stallholders’ confidence to continue to invest in the Old Bus Depot Markets now and into the future.

“We would like to thank the ACT Government, and more than anything we are very enthusiastic about the urban renewal of the Kingston area,” concluded Ms Hinds.
