People with a disability in the ACT region are being encouraged to play sport and stay active with a brand-new initiative, Everyone Can Play, being launched this week by Special Olympics ACT.

The main component of the initiative is a new website which aims to maximise participation in sport and active recreation for people with a disability in the ACT region. The new program will be launched on 24 June at the Australian Institute of Sport.

Everyone Can Play is a new online platform established by Special Olympics ACT which highlights disability inclusive sport and recreation opportunities in Canberra and the region,” said Rob Regent, Sport Development Manager (ACT and NSW) for Special Olympics Australia.

“We’ve set up the website, with support from the ACT Government, because we know how hard it can be to find out which sports and activities are available in the region for individuals with a disability.

“We hear this time and time again from the mums and dads of kids with a disability, and from the support workers who advocate on behalf of adults with a disability,” Rob continued.

The launch of Everyone Can Play will coincide with Special Olympics ACT’s State Basketball competition. As many as 100 athletes and their families from Canberra and NSW are expected for the weekend, and local athletes will be competing for a place on the ACT team for next year’s National Games.

“The basketball competition is a great opportunity for athletes to strive towards achieving success, win medals, and represent their club, but also to socialise and have some fun in an inclusive environment.

“It also aligns perfectly with the goals of Everyone Can Play, and presents a fantastic platform to introduce the initiative.

“While Everyone Can Play is an initiative being driven by Special Olympics ACT, it is for all organisations, groups and individuals who are committed to including people with a disability in sport and recreation activities,” Rob concluded.
