Train lovers get ready – Goulburn is on track to celebrate 65 years of streamlined locomotives in Australia on the 1-3 October, the October long weekend.
The Streamliners 2016 event will be held at the Goulburn Rail Heritage Centre, with around twenty locomotives expected to descend upon this regional centre. The event will attract both rail enthusiasts and those longing for a dose of nostalgia to celebrate first generation diesels that were built in Australia.
Locomotives in an array of colour schemes owned by numerous operators will be on display in Goulburn. An exciting itinerary is planned from sunrise to sunset. Each day will begin with a barbecue feast, and throughout the day attendees can expect to enjoy getting up close and personal with these locomotives as photographers snap away.
Saturday will include the loco sound-off throughout the day, while in the evening visitors can attend the Big Aussie BBQ and charity auction, then congregate for a spectacular fireworks display at 8pm. There will also be photographic displays and daily raffles. Visitors young and old alike will find the joy in seeing these streamliners in action as well as the opportunity to sit in the driver’s seat of those displayed in the roundhouse.
“As in many countries, Australia’s rail industry is forever evolving and one of the important factors in being a successful rail operator is using fuel efficient locomotives that require minimum maintenance,” said Bernie Baker, organiser of Streamliner 2016.
“This means there’s some entire classes of locomotives that have either been stored or sold in recent years. It’s time to get the classics together while we still can.
“Streamliners will be an event for all the senses – feel the wind through your hair as you jump on a passenger train shuttle, listen to the engines roar as they get up to 935 rpms, and see these well-loved streamliners restored in all their glory,” Bernie continued.
“Goulburn is a natural fit for this event, being less than 200 kilometres from Sydney and having a rich industrial history. We’re expecting train loads of visitors, so booking early is a must,” said Sarah Ruberto, Business Manager Marketing, Events & Culture at Goulburn Mulwaree Council said.
