The ACT Rugby Union Club, known as The RUC Barton, has recently merged with the Canberra North Bowling Club to become The RUC at Turner. The merger will be celebrated at the official ‘birth day’ of The RUC at Turner on Sunday 30 November 2014.

“The Canberra North Bowling Club, or Turner Bowls as it’s affectionately known, has been part of the social fabric of the inner north for over 50 years. The RUC is proud to be merging with the club, giving a new lease on life to one of Canberra’s most historic bowling establishments,” said Jeremy Wilcox, Secretary Manager of The RUC.

“We’re launching The RUC at Turner – a great place for sports lovers, families, students and residents of Turner and the surrounding areas.

“I’ve been asked if the club will be able to match it with the new hipster scene in Braddon.  We have intentionally not attempted to jump on the hipster bandwagon – we won’t be serving our beer in jars, however we are reopening the doors and welcoming everyone in with open arms, even the new bearded, hair quiffed, fixie bike riding funksters of the inner north.

“For the first time ever the club has undergone extensive refurbishments including improvements to the food and beverage offerings, new furniture, fixtures and fittings as well as a brand new bar, reception and gaming area,” Jeremy continued.

“Small clubs in the ACT have to keep reinventing themselves to maintain relevance with Canberra’s changing population and entertainment scene.  The RUC at Turner will be a demonstration of where clubs need to be taking their product over the next 10 years to survive.”

From 1pm on Sunday 30 November, the Canberra community is invited to The RUC at Turner to celebrate and enjoy free food, beer and wine tastings, free lawn bowls for kids and adults, watch cricket on the big screen and Elvis will be in the building from 4pm.

The official birthday celebrations will kick off at 1pm as Minister for Gaming and Racing, Joy Burch, cuts the ribbon to officially mark the birth day of The RUC at Turner.

The RUC at Turner offers the ever popular lawn bowls, twilight bowling, barefoot bowling, Canberra’ best steak that The RUC Barton has become renowned for, plus their much loved beer and wine lists, and locally roasted coffee. The club also features live sports with five large plasmas and a big screen. It’s also a great place for families with a family friendly atmosphere and a kids menu available.

“We can’t wait to show off the new The RUC at Turner and invite the local community to come and celebrate with us at the club’s official ‘birth day’,” Jeremy concluded.

The birthday celebrations will take place at The RUC at Turner, 54 McCaughey Street, Turner from 1pm. For more information visit www.theruc.com.au
